Away

There was screaming. There was always screaming when she was drunk. I just wish that Mom wouldn't take her problems out on Katrina. Katrina couldn't do anything about it. Things always got out of hand. That's when I had to scream at Mom to tell her to calm down; that just led to more screaming. Two nights ago I finally had enough. Something had just snapped. I waited until Mom was passed out, then I told Katrina to pack her bags. "Where are we going, Kenny?" I didn't know. "Anywhere away from her." She nodded in agreement.
Half an hour later we were headed out the front door. Mom was still asleep on the couch. We made our way out into the street. The street lights lined the way. "Where are we going?" I had to think. "Grandpa's house." Grandpa was way better than Mom. He actually cared about us. The only bad thing was that he lived a couple states away. I thought about this as we walked down the street to the bus stop. It would take a lot of cash to get us there. Oh well. I took all of the money from Moms secret money stash that she saves for alcohol. There was over a thousand dollars in there. That could probably get us there. Anyway, we still had a long way to go.
